Disadvantages in language limit the possibilities to integrate migrant workers in education, work, and socio-economically. Working immigrants with language disadvantages at the company level often prevent effective communication, their work flow, or promotion.

Integrate: how?

To integrate you have to learn the Dutch language, but not only that. You also have to learn how Dutch people work and live. Our government made this a law. If you’ve learned enough, you get an exam. This page is for those who were obligated to integrate after the 1st of January 2013.

Choosing a school

The integration course costs money. Do you want to borrow money for the integration course? Go to the site for Blik op Werk. The site has a list of schools. Choose a school from the list. You can borrow money from DUO for these schools. For other schools, you cannot borrow money from DUO.

What can you do?

Make it negotiable. Tell the candidate that it isn’t strange and that many people cannot read and write, and that it’s never too late to do something about it. There are special courses for adults, which are very different than earlier schools. Register your temporary employee for an intake interview.

There is a toolbox with which the consultant can quickly determine if there is a language barrier for both Dutch and foreign temporary employees.

Temp industry referrals can be sent to Bogaers Taleninstituut via a registration form.

Extra offer

The dearth of basic skills is a major problem in the Netherlands that can only be solved if everyone works together. In the databases of temporary employment agencies are many people that haven’t mastered the Dutch language. To bring this subject to the attention of your temporary employees, STOOF together with the Stichting Lezen & Schrijven (Reading & Writing Foundation) developed an example letter that every temporary agency can send to its temporary employees with its own logo.

[/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”People that are dealing with it”]

How many people are dealing with it in the Netherlands?

There are an estimated 1.5 million illiterate adults in the Netherlands. These people have great difficulty with reading and writing, and thereby do not function as well at work and in society. Of these people, 1 million have a Dutch background and half a million do not have a Dutch background.

That means that approximately 1 in 10 people in the Netherlands is illiterate. One in 15 of working people is illiterate, about 6% of the workforce.

The Stichting van de Arbeid (Labour Foundation) has commissioned a study to combat illiteracy in different sectors and companies. Click here to read this report.

Why is it important for an employee to be able to read and write?

Those with low rates of literacy have difficult reading newsletters, safety instructions, transportation schedules, rosters, writing a cover letter, or filling out time sheets.

Those with low rates of literacy miss this information, are more likely to be a security risk, can’t develop themselves fully within their jobs, and are less able to attend necessary training.

[/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”How do I know…”]

How do I know if a temporary employee has reading and writing problems?

Someone that can’t read or write well is not willing to disclose that information. They feel ashamed and go to great lengths to hide it, and have often developed an arsenal of “tricks.”

Look for the following signals:

The temporary employees:

  • Has difficulty completing time sheets;
  • Cannot write a CV or a motivation letter;
  • Doesn’t want to take tests on the computer;
  • Doesn’t read safety instructions, work instructions, or newsletters;
  • Has no interest in attending courses;
  • Doesn’t keep appointments;
  • Continues to request verbal explanations, even when they have the information in writing;
  • Prefers to complete simple forms at home.
